What are the common woodworking knives?

Woodworking tools are tools that use cutting methods to process wood into the required shape and size. There are two types of woodworking tools: hand and machine. Machine woodworking tools are used in batch and mass production. Machine-used woodworking tools are divided into 5 categories: saws, blades, milling cutters, drill bits and mortise processing tools.

A complete list of common woodworking tools:

1. Woodworking saw: Tools used for sawing wood, including circular saws, band saws, strip saws, chain saws and cylinder saws, etc. Circular saws and band saws are the most commonly used. When the saw kerf is parallel to the wood grain, it is called longitudinal cutting (splitting), and when the saw kerf is perpendicular to the wood grain, it is called transverse cutting (cutting). The circular sawtooth shape used in the latter is different from the former to facilitate cutting of fibers during cross cutting.

2. Blade: a flat tool with an edge, used for flat processing or sectioning of wood. Blades with different parameters are installed on various machine tools to perform different processing methods, such as planing, rotary cutting, scraping and shearing, etc. Planing is used for plane processing, and the blade or workpiece generally moves in a straight line. Planing under certain conditions (such as reducing the cutting angle) can cut thin wood, which is a high-quality decorative material. During rotary cutting, the wood rotates around a fixed center, and the blade makes continuous linear motion toward the center, cutting the wood into strip-shaped thin wood (veneer), which is used to produce plywood. Shears are used to cut veneers during plywood production.

3. Woodworking milling cutter: a rotary tool with one or more teeth. Through the relative movement between the workpiece and the milling cutter, each cutter tooth intermittently cuts off the workpiece. Woodworking milling cutter installation card methods are divided into two types: set milling cutters with holes and milling cutters with handles. There are three types of structures of set milling cutters: integral type, insert type and combined type. Milling cutters are widely used in joinery production for machining flat surfaces, forming surfaces, mortises, tenons, slots and engravings. Compared with milling cutters used for cutting metal, woodworking milling cutters have larger rake and relief angles in order to obtain a sharp edge and reduce cutting resistance. Another feature is that it has fewer cutting teeth and a larger chip space. In addition to tool steel and alloy steel, carbide is also widely used in woodworking milling cutter materials to improve production efficiency and tool life.

4. Woodworking drill bit: A woodworking drill bit is a rod-shaped or spiral-shaped tool with a cutting edge at the end, used for processing through holes or blind holes. The difference between a woodworking drill bit and a woodworking end mill is that there is no cutting edge on the side. In addition to the main cutting edge, the woodworking drill bit also has a sharp sinking edge on the outer edge to cut wood fibers and make the side of the hole smoother.

5. Mortise and tenon processing tools: There are many styles of special tools for processing mortise and tenon holes, including hollow square chisels (Figure 5), hollow square chisels with drill bits, chain drills and machine chisels, etc. The end face of a hollow square chisel has a crescent-shaped cutting edge, which is used to cut square corners around drilled holes. The hollow square chisel with a drill bit is a tool that combines a drill bit and a square chisel. The drill bit is installed inside the hollow square chisel. The chain hole drill is a continuously rotating chain-type multi-tooth tool that processes tenon holes similar to milling or longitudinal sawing. When using a machine chisel to open a tenon hole, the chisel performs an up-and-down reciprocating cutting motion.
